NOT HIRED, STILL FIRED UP
They say it so lightly—“aim higher, earn better, don’t waste your talent”—as if ambition were only a matter of stepping forward, not stumbling through unseen shadows.
My friends and colleagues stand around me like gentle winds refusing to let me settle into stillness. They see a horizon I keep avoiding, a version of me I am too afraid to meet. Where I have built a comfort zone, they see a comfort cage—soft, familiar, yet quietly limiting. I call it pressure, but perhaps it is polished encouragement, a quiet rebellion against my fears. They don’t walk in my shoes, but they refuse to let me stand still in them. They compel me not with force, but with faith; not with criticism, but with conviction.
I smile, I nod, I let the moment pass like a polite breeze, because how do I explain that my dreams are not limited by ambition, but guarded by unseen battles?
My coworkers see my potential like a bright skyline, but they do not see the fog I walk through every day. Where they see opportunity, I sometimes see the trembling edge of rejection, waiting to confirm my deepest fears.
It’s not a lack of courage, but an overflow of what ifs—what if I’m not enough there, what if I cannot keep up, what if the door that opens today quietly closes tomorrow?
So I stay, not because I am incapable of more, but because I am protecting the fragile confidence I have stitched together over time.
I didn’t chase the opportunity—my friends placed it gently in my hands, like a mirror I was too afraid to look into. They stitched courage into my doubts, whispering that my comfort zone had become a beautifully decorated cage. So, on their insistence, I dared to knock on a door I once only admired from afar.
One day, I walked into a school carrying twelve years of chalk dust on my sleeves and a heart full of grammar, grace, and grit. The sunlight outside was harsh, and stepping into the dim office required a moment — just a few breaths to let my eyes adjust. But before my vision could settle, their judgment had already decided. They noticed my cautious steps, the way my hand gently searched for the chair, and mistook dignity for disability. They measured my sight, not my insight. What they did not see was the classroom I have illuminated where shy students find their voices, where red ink becomes not criticism but craftsmanship. They did not know that I can detect a misplaced comma like a musician hears a false note. I can polish paragraphs until they shine brighter than daylight.
They never see the application I folded with trembling hope, nor the rejection that unfolded like a silent storm—because they could see my vision, but never my vision. The world does not count the nights it took to gather my scattered self, nor the strength it demanded to walk—however slowly—into rooms that seemed to judge my pace before my potential. To strangers, I am a silhouette of shortcomings, a story simplified into limits; but to those who truly know me, I am a quiet storm of strength, a blurred sight with a brilliantly clear fight, a living proof that even when the world misreads your focus, your purpose can still refuse to go out of sight.
Sometimes, surviving with grace in a place that understands your rhythm is braver than chasing a world that might not. My journey is not a race to prove my worth; it is a quiet art of holding on, of showing up, of choosing stability over storms. So when they ask why I don’t reach higher, I wish I could tell them— I am already climbing mountains they cannot see.
Yes, I lost an opportunity that day. The door closed softly, but it did not slam on my spirit. I have long learned how to live in partial light. I have mastered the art of turning obstacles into outlines and outlines into opportunities. A principal may have judged my steps, but she could not measure my resilience.
I may walk carefully, but I teach boldly. I may see shadows, but I create sunshine in minds. My vision is not limited to what my eyes can see — it is defined by what my heart believes. And that, no rejection can ever blur.
Continuous masterpieces one after the other 👏🏻. Brava! 🙌🏻
